Bible vs Constitution

How can American Christians accept marriage equality?

The only requirements are to learn the actual teachings of Jesus in the Bible, both the specific teachings and the overall message, and to learn about the system of government we have, as set up by the founding fathers and the Constitution. The first means that a Christian can honestly accept equality; the second means that American law cannot be based on somebody’s personal religious beliefs anyway.

How can American Christians oppose marriage equality?

This requires a deliberate effort to ignore large sections and the main points of the Bible, in order to hand-pick individual passages and take them out of context so that they sound like they support your fears and prejudices. Every single Bible passage cited in opposition to marriage equality falls into this category. Also, opposition to equality requires a misrepresentation of the American system.

Beware of false teaching. It comes from people looking to God in order to justify their own fears and prejudices. It comes from people and organizations that claim to be Christian yet make no attempt to follow the actual teachings of Jesus. It comes with labels such as “tradition” and “God’s law”. These are the same labels that in the past were used to support institutions such as slavery.

As for God’s law?

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7:12, NIV

Are you a Christian? Feel free to say so whenever you want. But please don’t go out of your way to tell me you are a Christian if your message also shows that you are not willing to learn and follow the teachings of Jesus – the actual teachings of Jesus which you can read and study for yourself, not the teachings of people and organizations claiming to be Christian.

Don’t go around saying that you are being persecuted for being a Christian when people state that they don’t agree with your false teachings. False teaching gives Christianity a bad name.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like the pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” – Matthew 6:5-8, NIV
